The Q´ero Nation, and especially the children – are in great danger. Without the benefit of basic services like clean drinking water, electricity, education, sanitary facilities and access to health care, they cannot survive. Infant mortality between the ages of 0 and 5 is 47%. With well below-freezing temperatures during the winter months ( June through August), babies and older people die quickly of easily treatable respiratory illnesses. Especially the lack of education and electricity in Q´ero makes any attempt at developing small industries futile.
NGO´s, individuals with dubious motives and mining companies are slowly invading Q´ero. Today, more than 20% of Q´eros normally living in their communities have migrated to the city, so that their children can be educated and, maybe, keep the entire Q´ero Nation from disintegrating.
