Project

Q´ero is an ancestral Peruvian community, located in the District and Province of Paucartambo, in the Department of Cusco, Peru.

Due to the isolation of their communities, the Q´eros have continued to practice the rituals and traditions of their famous ancestors, the Incas, and are considered to be the only living witnesses to Peruvian history. Through them, Inca religion, music, dances, dwellings, the organization of family and farming activities, their knowledge of vertical farming, traditional medicine and others have remained alive.

But while this isolation contributed to the conservation of the Inca culture, it has also meant the absence of all types of basic services like health-care, education, electrification, to name only the most important ones, and has condemned the Q´eros to a life of extreme poverty, as indicated by the National Institute of Statistics and Information of Peru.

This phenomenon is at the root of a great migratory movement, with many families now leaving Q´ero in search of greater opportunities for the education of their children.

REDUCING POVERTY AND SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FOR THE FUTURE:
A PROJECT TO BRING EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION, AND ELECTRIFICATION, TO THE Q´ERO NATION OF PERU

The Project consists of 2 parts:

  1. EDUCATION
    1. According to the Q´ero leadership, a solid primary education for their children, offered in appropriate and inviting learning environments, as well as access to  electricity, are the Nation´s first and fundamental priorities. The education offered in Q´ero communities today does not meet the guidelines of the Peruvian Ministry of Education and covers at best the first 4 of 6 elementary grades. The schools have not been maintained and are in deplorable condition; teachers´ quarters, if they exist at all, are beyond unacceptable and cause teachers to run away from their jobs. The Project, which will operate throughout the Q´ero communities, fully addresses these needs, as follows:

    2. The Project provides for creating the infrastructure necessary to offer an excellent primary education in Q´ero : by building 3 new schools, rehabilitating 4 existing schools, adding kitchens and sanitary services to all 7 schools and building 7 new teachers´ houses.

With the infrastructure in place and with the collaboration of the regional and provincial Education authorities, reliable primary education for grades 1-6 will be provided and the number of professors per school increased to improve the teacher/student ratio.

The Budget for the planned education infrastructure per school amounts to approximately U.S. $ 42,000.-  and includes :

      Rehabilitation Construction
      1. Construction
      2. Kitchen
      3. Sanitary Services
      4. Teachers’ Quarters
      5. Transport of Materials

  2. ELECTRICITY

The Project also provides for the installation of basic electrical services for all Q´ero communities through the construction micro- hydro-electric plants, as well as the necessary infrastructure for Internet access.

The availability of electricity in Q´ero will not only provide light, but have many other benefits which will make the development of small industries like the marketing of clean llama and alpaca wool, the sale of lagoon-grown trout, the building and use of greenhouses, among many other initiatives, possible.
